Non-controllable causes include: female gender, who are at higher risk than males, and some types of arthritis are transferable to the next generation genetically.

Controllable causes include injury to the knee; having the extra weight of the body; microbial infection; some occupations which require performing a similar movement consistently; having a sedentary lifestyle or any previous medical condition.
Some of the environmental factors which may increase the risk of having arthritis include – past history of injury to the knee joint; infection; personal habit of smoking; or in a job where repetitive motion is performed for a long duration.
